SUMMARY: A paperback anthology series published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich and edited by Matthew J. Bruccoli and Richard Layman. Each edition contains an interview with a noted crime fiction writer, as well as excerpts from that writer's then-recent novel and a series of short stories by a sampling of other authors.

Volume 1, published in 1987 (ISBN: 0-15-657722-4) contains an interesting interview with James Ellroy, as well as an excerpt from The Black Dahlia.

Volume 4 (ISBN: 0-15-657722-4) contains Ellroy's short story Since I Don't Have You, a tale featuring Buzz Meeks (The Big Nowhere), Mickey Cohen and Howard Hughes, among other Ellroy staples. The short story was eventually filmed for the Showtime cable series Fallen Angels and anthologized in Hollywood Nocturnes.
