The story of Lana Turner & Johnny Stompanato

(Based on Cheryl Crane's Memoir)

James Ellroy has signed to executive produce a new film based on Cheryl Crane's autobiography, "DETOUR." The TV-movie, to be produced for ABC, details the ill-fated love affair of Johnny Stompanato, a stooge of L.A. mobster Mickey Cohen, and 1950s-era movie star Lana Turner. Crane, Turner's daughter, centers her memoir around her fatal stabbing of Stompanato — an act ruled a justifiable homicide.

Ellroy executed the outline for the script, which is being written by Mitch Brian. Brian is also the writer/director of the award-winning short film "Stay Clean," which is based on a portion of an Ellroy novel.

Stompanato appears as a character in several Ellroy novels and short stories. The film adaptation of "L.A. Confidential" also included Stompanato/Turner "cameos."
