"JAMES ELLROY: DEMON DOG OF AMERICAN CRIME FICTION," was produced in 1993. Director Reinhard Jud catches Ellroy fresh from his completion of "White Jazz," the final volume in Ellroy's epic "L.A. Quartet" (preceded by "The Black Dahlia," "The Big Nowhere," and "L.A. Confidential.") The film depicts Ellroy at work in his studio, on tour and at book signing parties. Ellroy (often accompanied by his Bull Terrier, "Barko,") also leads the viewer on a tour of Los Angeles. Stops include the sites of famous crime scenes (including 39th and Norton, where the Black Dahlia's body was found), as well as significant places in Ellroy's past (the site of his mother's murder; homes he broke into as a wayward vagrant, and his childhood home in El Monte).
