SUMMARY

A virtual jazz soundtrack to James Ellroy's The Black Dahlia.

Jazz artist Bob Belden's Black Dahlia CD tells the story of Elizabeth Short in 12 tracks. In his liner notes, Belden notes his twin inspirations: Jerry Goldsmith's soundtrack for "Chinatown" and Ellroy's L.A. Quartet novels. "This fascination with the noir side of Los Angeles drew me to the writings of James Ellroy," Belden writes. "His novel, The Black Dahlia was a fantasy based on the world that surrounded Elizabeth Short. His novel made no attempt to be literal, nor was it about Elizabeth Short; it was Ellroy's imaginative use of the murder as a backdrop to create a 'suspended reality' and paint an eerie, dark picture of a psychotic Los Angeles."

Some of the tunes recalls Goldsmith's other, more recent noir soundrack for "L.A. Confidential."
